Delivering the Potential of Diagrammatic Logics
نویسنده
چکیده
Diagrammatic notations and reasoning have become a prominent focus of research over the last two decades. We have now reached a point where the techniques required to formalize diagrammatic logics and prove meta-level results, such as soundness and completeness, are well understood. Moreover, we have insight into what makes effective diagrams. However, the majority of progress has been on diagrammatic logics that are very limited in expressiveness. Whilst such logics are exemplars of the current state-of-the-art and are useful in simple cases, they have not yet realized their full potential in real world applications. This paper summarizes the existing state-of-theart in diagrammatic logics and poses a set of open questions. The paper will discuss the need for software tools to support the creation and use of diagrammatic logics which are needed for large-scale real-world take-up. Significant research is still necessary to deliver the full potential of diagrammatic logics.

Diagrammatic logic applied to a parameterization process
This paper provides an abstract definition of some kinds of logics, called diagrammatic logics, together with a definition of morphisms and of 2-morphisms between diagrammatic logics. The definition of the 2-category of diagrammatic logics rely on category theory, mainly on adjunction, categories of fractions and limit sketches. This framework is applied to the formalization of a parameterizati...

متن کاملHow to combine diagrammatic logics
We claim that combining “things”, whatever these things are, is made easier if these things can be seen as the objects of a category. Then things are related by morphisms, and the categorical machinery provides various tools for combining things, typically limits and colimits, as well as other constructions. What should be required from an object in a category to call it a logic? The analysis o...
متن کاملDiagrammatic Inference
Diagrammatic logics were introduced in 2002, with emphasis on the notions of specifications and models. In this paper we improve the description of the inference process, which is seen as a Yoneda functor on a bicategory of fractions. A diagrammatic logic is defined from a morphism of limit sketches (called a propagator) which gives rise to an adjunction, which in turn determines a bicategory o...
متن کاملVisualizing and Specifying Ontologies using Diagrammatic Logics
This paper proposes a diagrammatic logic that is suitable for specifying ontologies. We take a case study style approach to presenting the diagrammatic logic, and draw contrast with RDF graphs and description logics. We provide specifications of two ontologies and show how to depict instances. Diagrammatic reasoning is used to show that an instance conforms to a specification. We also include e...
